The endemic features of the Sierra Nevada are a consequence of the gradual withdrawal of the ice after the Ice Age, during which this mountain range kept Africa and Europe connected to each other. Then, when the ice gradually melted, the summits of the Sierra Nevada became a refuge with the ecological conditions necessary for survival of its isolated species, which evolved differently from species that were isolated in the Pyrenees, the Alps, and even in Asian mountains like the Caucasus and the Himalayas, giving rise to species unique in the world. You will be able to observe these from a circular route that passes through the spectacular area of lagoons that arose out of the glaciers of the Dílar river.
